Lisa – An Intern’s Perspective

13 01 2010

I am a new intern at Joint Council and I am just finishing up my second week.  So far, it has been great!  This morning, Tom gave us (the new interns) an overview of what the organization does, how it operates, and all of the actors involved in the programs and services of the organization.  It is amazing how many volunteers, organizations, committees, councils, and caucuses are involved with Joint Council.

Yesterday’s earthquake in Haiti was a devastating disaster.  Today has been a prime example of how Joint Council goes into action when a crisis occurs in a country we work with.  Tom and Rebecca have been on the phone all day with members discussing the safety and status of orphans in Haiti, and with people who are in the process of adopting children from the country.  We have heard some extremely sad accounts of orphanages in the capital, Port-au-Prince, that were completely destroyed by the earthquake – thankfully all of the children are ok.   But it is devastating to hear that these children, who were already deprived of permanent and safe homes, have now lost their temporary homes as well.

Tomorrow, Joint Council will be announcing some programs to help the families and children of Haiti.  I hope to be a part of that effort.
