Joint Council’s Position Statement on Fly Away Children

21 09 2009

The Australian ABC News program Foreign Correspondent, recently broadcast a program entitled Fly Away Children.  This program focused on intercountry adoption in Ethiopia and raised grave concerns.

We have  issued a Summary Position Statement which is available here and on the Joint Council website.

We have also initiated a review and assessment of possible violations of the Joint Council Standards of Practice.  As appropriate, the findings will be reported publicly and to the authorities.

As part of our response to the concerns raised in the program, Joint Council’s Director of Programs & Services Rebecca Harris and I will travel to Ethiopia on October 2, 2009.  An additional element of this advocacy trip is the presentation of  the Joint Council’s Second Edition of the Standards of Practice specific to Ethiopia.

All of us at Joint Council are committed to protecting the right of every child to a permanent and safe family, whether that be their family of birth, kinship family or adopted family.  This effort is part of our commitment.

Tom DiFilipo                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Joint Council President
